Some of us spend a lot of time and energy trying to be someone else. Someone thinner. Smarter. Taller. Wealthier. Born in a different country. Funnier. Stronger. Calmer. Less reactive. More disciplined. More extrovert. And the list goes on. This can generate tension and self-acceptance issues, and potentially trigger more severe mental problems.
So give yourself permission to be who you are today, right here, right now. Perfectly imperfect. Unique.
The value of diversity
Our uniqueness is our gift to the world. Furthermore, our perceived imperfection might be what someone else perceives as perfection. The value of our community resides in the diversity and variety of the members. Things would be less interesting and less rewarding if we were all the same, if we thought all the same, if we behaved all the same. Without diversity there is limited progress. Specially, without diversity of background, culture, education and thinking patters.
It’s OK to be different, actually it is wonderful! Give yourself permission to be who you are, ready to offer the gift of your uniqueness to those around you.
One important rule
There is just one rule: to respect others.
If you have a habit or a behavior that you know may offend or disturb those around you, then I invite you to find ways to tweak it.
Permission is not stagnation
Being and accepting ourselves doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t pursue improvement, not at all. We can all work on developing new skills, polishing others, learning and growing. But that’s just a goal to move towards, a motivation for today, a purpose. Not something that makes you feel bad today because you don’t have it yet.
We are all evolving masterpieces
Give yourself permission to be exactly who you are, a masterpiece, but also a work in progress. An individual whose uniqueness is key to make the word a better place.
Be well, be unapologetically you, and remember to be respectful.
